The Future of Food

Sun Jul 12, 2009, 8:16 AM
I just finished watching this documentary called "The Future of Food". Admittedly, it does seem one sided - as they allocated very little time to the obverse. However, I still would recommend watching it, as it examines the effects of genetically modified foods that affects the food supply of the entire world and hence, YOU. It's relevancy is timely and without going into too much detail, I want to talk about one of the key issues it raises that most people are unaware.

Beyond the issue of the unpredictable long term cellular interactions inherent in GMOs (genetically modified organisms), this documentary points to the deleterious impact of patenting nature itself. So what does that mean? What if researchers in other fields such as cancer or HIV/AIDs had their hands tied because of large patent fees involved for simply using genetic blueprints that we have had in existence for thousands of years for their research? Should we allow corporations to own human existence and ultimately determine the direction that we take as a species? If an uniform international patent law is put into place, as the corporations would want, this is exactly what will happen. Thankfully, most foreign governments and their people, are protesting and offering resistance. But for how long?

One of the things missing from this documentary is a proposal for possible solutions. Corporations aren't evil. As a structured entity, it is dictated by profits. If profits dictate organically produced items, that's what they will produce. However, it will always be in their best interest to protect their investments. How they go about that...may be construed as "evil" which requires vigilance on our part as consumers and citizens. Naturally this leads to the question "What can we do about this?"

I believe, we have freewill, and we determine our destiny. So to begin with, simply buy organically produced foods. And if you are inclined to do so, donate to organizations such as "The Center for Food Safety" either your time or money. The point is, we're not completely helpless, and we can avoid our own demise, if we choose to. Let's not suffer from the shackles of short-sightedness but free ourselves by focusing on the long-term.
