The Gleaners - J.F. Millet

Description

This is my first contribution to DeviantART, and it is the first time I've ever tried drawing - I drew stick figures up to this point (and I still do - I can't draw what I can't see). My apologies to the Master Artist for liberties I took in recreating his work. Also the original piece was much bigger, so I had to scale it down so it'll fit on the paper I bought.

Three years ago, a Van Gogh exhibit came to the NY Metropolitan Museum and part of the exhibition included works that inspired the Artist. One such work was Jean Francois Millet who etched this piece in reverse on a printing plate - simply amazing! At first, I wanted to take a photograph of it but the security guard sternly told me that photographs were prohibited. So I defiantly took out a ballpoint pen and drew a portion of the piece on a small 3"X3" yellow post-it note. To my surprise, I discovered that I could copy Millet's lines. The next day I went down to the art store, picked up an Indian ink pen, a drawing pad and voila - my first.

Very nice: you managed very well to create an etch-like effect: very suitable for this particular picture.
